Mike Haynes - Television play-by-play announcer
A name that has become synonymous with Avalanche hockey in Denver, Mike Haynes enters his 20th season as the voice of the Colorado Avalanche.
After spending 10-plus seasons calling play-by-play for the Avalanche radio broadcasts, Haynes moved to television during the 2005-06 season and begins his tenth year in that role for Altitude Sports & Entertainment. On March 18, 2014 he called his 1,600th Avalanche game.
Haynes has been honored as Denver’s “Best Sportscaster” by Westword magazine on five occasions, and was voted the fans’ favorite play-by-play announcer in Colorado in the 2002 Denver Post Fan Forum.
Demonstrating his versatility, Haynes has repeatedly proven his ability to successfully take on any broadcasting situation handed to him. Since the NHL lockout season in 2004-05, Mike has handled play-by-play duties for 13 different sports, including Colorado Eagles hockey games, Colorado Springs Sky Sox baseball, Colorado Rapids soccer, college football, college basketball, rodeo, boxing, wrestling and Colorado Mammoth lacrosse. He began his radio career while attending college at Northeastern University, calling NU football, basketball and hockey games.
Since 1980, Haynes has called games for 14 professional sports teams and five universities. He has also called local games and been a sportscaster for five radio stations.
Since 1989, Haynes has worked regularly in professional hockey. He was mikeside for one year announcing for the Baltimore Skipjacks before spending three seasons as the play-by-play man for the Capital District Islanders of the American Hockey League. Prior to moving to Denver, he joined the Colonial Hockey League’s Utica Bulldogs in 1993-94.
In addition to his hockey work, Haynes handled the radio calls for the former Tucson Toros baseball club of the Pacific Coast League for two seasons and also called games for the Utica Blue Sox and Albany-Colonie Yankees. He also fulfilled both radio and television duties for the Roller Hockey International Denver Daredevils. In July of 2002, he called the national championships of golden gloves boxing on Fox Sports. He has been asked to step in and perform television play-by-play functions for the University of Denver and has filed reports on KCNC Channel 4 during the playoffs. Haynes has also filled in on radio play-by-play for the Denver Nuggets.
Haynes enjoys competing in local ice hockey, lacrosse and softball leagues, and coaching his children on their sports teams.
